Frequently asked questions about the Advocates Training Programme (ATP).

How do I apply for the Advocates Training Programme (ATP)?

Applications for the programme are done online through the school’s website.

Is the ATP conducted part-time or full-time?

This programme is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Part-time classes are conducted during weekday evenings and on Saturdays.

Is the ATP offered as an online training?

Yes, we offer both physical and online classes.

What are the admission requirements for the ATP for LL.B graduates admitted to the university AFTER 8th December, 2014?

Graduates of Kenyan Universities:

  • Attained a minimum of grade B (plain) in English Language or Kiswahili and a mean grade of C (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent; or
  • Attained a minimum of two (2) principals and one (1) subsidiary totalling to an aggregate of ten (10) points in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) or its equivalent; and
  • Have passed in the mandatory 16 core subjects as stipulated in the Second Schedule of the Legal Education Act, 2012; and
  • Hold or are eligible for conferment of an LL.B degree from a university recognised in Kenya.

Note: Applicants holding secondary school qualifications other than those offered by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) must seek equation from the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).

Graduates of Foreign Universities:

  • Attained a minimum of grade B (plain) in English Language or Kiswahili and a mean grade of C (plus) in the KCSE or its equivalent; or
  • Attained a minimum of two (2) principals and one (1) subsidiary totalling to an aggregate of ten (10) points in the KACE or its equivalent; and
  • Have passed in the mandatory 16 core subjects as stipulated in the Second Schedule to the Legal Education Act, 2012; and
  • Hold or are eligible for conferment of a recognised LL.B degree from a foreign university; and
  • Obtain clearance from the Council of Legal Education (CLE);
  • Must sit and pass the Pre-Bar Examination as provided under the Second Schedule to the Kenya School of Law Act, part 1 (b) (iii).

What are the admission requirements for the ATP for LL.B graduates admitted to the university BEFORE 8th December, 2014?

Applicants must have been admitted into the LL.B degree programme before 8th December, 2014 and must satisfy the requirements under the relevant regulations, including holding a recognised LL.B degree, meeting the minimum entry requirements and, where applicable, sitting the Pre-Bar Examination.

How long is the training?

The Advocates Training Programme is conducted over 18 months. The first 12 months are conducted through training by the School, followed by a 6-month pupillage. Teaching of the ATP is conducted on a clinical basis.

When do applications for the programme open?

Typically, applications for the ATP open in November and classes start in January. The exact application dates are placed on the School’s website and across the School’s various social media channels.

Is there financial aid available for ATP students?

Yes. The Kenya School of Law Legal Education Fund is available through HELB, subject to availability and eligibility. Updates on availability are shared yearly on our website and through our social media channels.
